Hoops that go with everything, drops kept for the evening, studs that never leave — earrings are the easiest way into fine jewellery, and the hardest to get right.

Our earrings

Worn every day, noticed every day

Earrings live a harder life than most jewellery. They are put in half-asleep, caught in jumpers, slept in and dropped down sinks. So we build them heavier where they need strength and lighter where they touch the ear, and we finish the backs as carefully as the fronts.

Pairs are matched by hand here in Hatton Garden — stones for colour and cut, gold for tone and texture — because two earrings that are each beautiful on their own can still look wrong together.

How to choose

Four things worth knowing

Most disappointing earrings are not badly made — they are the wrong weight, the wrong length or the wrong fitting for the person wearing them.

01

The fitting

A post and butterfly is quick and light. A screw back is slower but far harder to lose. A click hoop stays shut on the school run. Choose for your day, not for the photograph.

02

Weight and balance

Anything over about six grams a side will start to drag on a stretched piercing. We hollow larger hoops and set drops so the weight hangs below the lobe rather than pulling on it.

03

Length

A drop that ends at the jaw lengthens a round face; one that ends above it widens a long one. Try both before you decide — the difference is five millimetres and it is obvious.

04

The metal on skin

14ct is harder and better for a piercing that reacts; 18ct is warmer in colour and softer. Neither is nickel-bearing in anything we make.

The collection

From the earring collection

Hoops, drops and discs from the current collection. Every pair can be made in a different carat, a different length, or with stones set into it.

Wear & care

Keeping it at its best

Put them on last

Perfume, hairspray and dry shampoo leave a film on gold that dulls it within weeks. Jewellery goes on after everything else, and comes off first.

Check the butterflies

They soften with use and lose their grip. Bring them in and we will replace them — it takes a minute and it saves an earring.

Store them as pairs

Loose in a dish, gold rubs gold. A lined box with separate compartments keeps a polished finish polished.
